Chowdhury Mueen Uddin dedicated over four decades to public service and grassroots community organisations. 

 Before formal retirement, he served as Director of Muslim Spiritual Care Provision in the NHS, where he advised healthcare providers on spiritual care delivery to patients.

During his tenure, he was elected chair of the Multi-Faith Group for Healthcare Chaplaincy, overseeing nine world faith groups including Anglican (Church of England), Roman Catholic, Free Churches, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain.

Throughout his career, he held numerous distinguished positions including:

  • Board member of Labo Housing Association and Gateway Housing Association

  • Past board member and vice chairman of As-Shahada Housing Association

  • Chairman and board member of Muslim Aid

  • Vice Chairman of East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre

  • Secretary General of the Council of Mosques UK and Eire (1984 – 1988)

  • Deputy Director of the Islamic Foundation, Markfield, Leicestershire (1995 – 2005)

Early Career

Born in Bangladesh, Chowdhury Mueen Uddin studied Literature at the University of Dhaka. He began his professional journey as a journalist, where he reported on significant events including the Great 1970 Cyclone and interviewed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the emerging independence leader of Bangladesh.

Life in the UK

Chowdhury Mueen Uddin began his life in the UK as a teacher at secondary schools. He played a pivotal role in establishing various charitable and social-welfare initiatives, with a particular focus on supporting the burgeoning British-Bangladeshi community in East London. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to fostering inter-faith cooperation in inner-cities.

Current Activities

Now retired, Chowdhury Mueen Uddin maintains an active interest in writing and literature. He continues to contribute to newspapers and journals, with publications in sector-specific periodicals such as 'Regeneration' and 'Planning'. He is a regular contributor to the Muslim World Book Review.
